The artwork is the best I have ever seen. The story is great and the concept is amazing. All of the characters are great, especially Hikaru and Mr. Touya. Normally, a manga artist would take some chapters before improving from the initial sloppiness and being comfortable with his/her artwork to whip up something decent. I'm impressed! There's no need for the art to improve! It's that good from the start!! However, characterisation wise is not as detailed as possible, partly because there is so many characters to contend with. I mean, the artist only deals with the side of the personality that has to do with the game of Go, and period. True, the manga evolves around Go. Being too rigid in evolving the story around this setting however, makes the characters rather few-sides than fully fleshed out. Therefore, this is definitely not the BEST manga that I have ever read, definitely. Although the plot holds together. Despite its flaws, it holds a class of it's own with the intriguing topic of Go and the rather dramatic telling of the story. I mean, a consiousness-occupying spirit?! One who also happens to be the one who coached the greatest Go player ever from the Edo era??? Duh... Another thing I got to add. I love Sai. Right, he look beautiful rather than handsome (don't you love that hair? And he plays the flute!!! The sheer elegance!!!! Well, from the pictures anyway...) He looked so dashing when he is serious and so adorable when he is whining away and crying. You know, when the artist gives him the chibi look! When I came across this manga, it had just been release. I absolutely have no idea what kind of story it is about. I buy the 1st book just to try it out. I NEVER regret my decision. I fall in love with the manga when I finished reading the 1st book. Love the plot, it's detail drawing, cute Sai, talented Hikaru and the interesting world of GO. I'm so obsessed with it that I even delicate my first webpage to this manga. Definitely hope that this manga can continue as long as can be. It's one of the best manga I have come across..It got me hooked from the beginning...Initially I thoughh nothing of it, since I know nothing about chess and I often find manga with these topics boring..But hikaru no go is really amazing and out of the ordinary....simply but elaborate plots...fresh cjaracters and and simple layout which allows readers who knows nothing about chess feel its impact.... The anime in my opinion was a bit better then the manga (which is a great surprise even for myself). The manga had moved too slow compare to the anime, there also to say playing "go" is actually not that interesting. However the great thing about this series is the characters, all are well developed and very interesting. Especially Hikaru, and Akira you see them grow up. Akira realizing that he should stop being stuck up and should lousen up a bit (although he is great in many ways), and Hikaru learning to have more patient by playing go, etc. Overall, i don't think this is a great series or is it a bad series... It is interesting but still will never be able to compare with some other anime like Rurouni Kenshin, and EVA. I may not understand the game of Go (though I'm learning ^^) but as things have said, to love this series you don't have to. I'm able to follow the new chapters online by someone who scans them, so I'm not missing the really exciting part that's occuring now! ^.^ But I'm also waiting for my friend to send me volume 15, although I know it's really sad, and will make me cry. I don't know that the anime is better. You could care less about Go and you'll still be hooked if you read or watch Hikaru no Go. While shounen stories typically have "ganbaru" or "persevere" themes, this series takes it to another level and makes the reader/watcher want to go out and try just as hard as Hikaru at whatever he/she wants to do in life.
