| StoryHaruhi Suzumiya, a high school girl who can unconsciously change reality, and her strange antics with her school club, the SOS Brigade, which she founded to investigate any mysterious happenings. Haruhi forcibly drafts her cynical classmate Kyon who narrates the series, and similarly recruits three additional members into her club: the silent bibliophile Yuki Nagato, the shy and timid Mikuru Asahina, and the friendly "mysterious exchange student" Itsuki Koizumi. These members soon reveal themselves to Kyon as the extraordinary characters Haruhi is seeking, sent by their various organizations to observe her and hold her reality warping powers in check by maintaining the illusion of a normal life. | 2006/05/30 Very Good(+2 pnt) [Edit/Delete/Suggest to delete/Show only this review or post sympathy comment/] by Carlos Ross (Skip) Review history[Good:80(52%) Normal:18(12%) Bad:55(36%)] / Provider: 3396 Host:3329 Browser: 6326 While some people may be turned off by Haruhi's aggressive and eccentric personality, I really enjoyed this show, especially because Kyon's inner monologue is deliciously sarcastic and hilarious. The animation is passable and the music is largely generic, and the anachronic order of the episodes is sometimes infuriatingly confusing, but on the whole, Kyon and Haruhi themselves are real fun to watch, very lively and energetic. The supporting characters are acceptable -- once Yuki gets going, she's rather intriguing, and while Mikuru is sometimes annoyingly cutesy, it's never to the point of pure excess. It's not another harem show, that's for sure! Update: I really, really like this show. First off, the characters are rather excellent, and I rather enjoyed Kyon's usually snarky, sometimes poetic, and quite often true-to-life internal monologue. Haruhi herself is a real treat, lively and anything but passive, though occasionally, her treatment of Mikuru in particular can get a mite grating. The animation is well-done, and I really enjoyed the various homages to other anime series or pop-culture phenomena. The writing is snappy, and the series is just plain interesting in its handling of sci-fi within a seemingly innucuous school-comedy scenario. The beginning can get quite confusing, but once you get past the idea that the series was not released in chronological order, it's not too hard to follow. After seeing the whole series, I think it was actually a good directorial choice to present it in this fashion. I never make it a point to avoid shows based strictly on popularity, which sometimes leads to frustration at the "lowest-common-denominator" approach of many anime companies in this day and age, but Haruhi is refreshingly enjoyable, and well worth the watch.
